Our Entry Way - The Reveal!

September 1st I set out to makeover our entry way and I announced that it would be the #letsroomtogether space for September but really, I figured I could probably get it done in two weeks.  Ha ha ha HA!

Hellooo Sheena.  Take a deep breath and settle down on those hippity-high hopes from here on out.  Time ain't crawling like it used to.

That joke was on me but also on the sad state of our entry before we started.  Let's back track...
All the way back (a few months) to popcorn ceilings, wallpaper, and that sad trim.  The ceilings got smoothed over, the wallpaper came down, and the trim got freshened up.

Add a few more throws of confetti here and there and...

**I apologize for the crazy glare coming through those sidelights.  I'm no photography wiz and I couldn't for the life of me figure out a way to photograph this angle and not get a glare.**

Before:

After:
It's a whole heck of a lot more modern and one thing that helped with that was reworking the trim inside those sidelights.  Before, they were separated into three different panes and now they're just one long pane.  All it took was removing the trim (which, crazily, popped right out), carefully prying out those middle pieces, filling the nail holes, and painting.  (Along the way I dropped one at some point too and had to nail it back together but we'll try to forget about that, won't we?)

Before:

After:

If you block out the wood paneling with your hand, things look even better.  ;)

And then of course there's the closet!  I couldn't give the whole entry way a makeover and just leave the closet as-is!  Before the walls and trim in there were a dirty cream though the ceilings were scraped and painted back when we did the rest of the ceilings.  This is an extra horrible picture that I took right before I started emptying and painting one afternoon but...

I painted the trim and walls a crisp white, spray painted the closet rod gold (why not?), and added some wallpaper to the back wall just for kicks.

And then of course I had to fill it up with all of our stuff again so it's not quite as cute full as it is empty but, it's made leaps and bounds either way and it jives with the room it's attached to.

My favorite part of the whole entry though is the new light fixture.  We paired this shade* (found on sale!) from World Market with the inside of the old chandelier.  We could have saved ourselves some time and hung it with a light kit like this one* but I liked the idea of trying to use what we already had.  It took a little bit of elbow grease, spray paint, and a thinking cap but now it looks like it was made like this.

It looks dreamy with the lights off but with the lights on...
 M A G I C.

The lamp was thrifted and the details on it's makeover are here.  The mirror*, hooks* on the wall, console table*, and rug are all from Dirt Cheap.  The paint color on the walls is China White by Ben Moore (color-matched to Valspar paint) and the trim and ceilings are Pure White by Sherwin-Williams (also color-matched to Valspar).

The front door went Comfort Gray by Sherwin-Williams.  It's a minty-gray and both sides of this door will be rocking it as soon as Mother Nature gets over her hot flashes down here.

While things have improved 10485% in here, we're still not finished.  You probably noticed that the interior doors are still sporting their outdated paint colors (we're still deciding on a paint color for all of the interior doors) and the flooring will eventually be replaced all throughout here and the rest of the living space with some wood-look tile.  Also, while it was fun to repaint the front door, we have a "new-to-us" front door courtesy of a friend (thank you Siri!) currently sitting in our storage room outside, awaiting it's installation.  It's going to get a a little bit of a bolder paint job because, while this pastel is fun, bold is more fun.  Also, I'd love love love to amp up the volume in here even more with stenciled walls (I've been drooling over Katie's wallpaper and might go for something similar).  So, I guess you could say that this makeover was Phase 1 and Phase 2 is up and coming (hopefully within the next year).

Hip hip hooray for progress!

And progress is great and much-needed but the problem with gussying up one room at a time is that you bring that room up to par but then the other rooms around it aren't finished so everything is a little disjointed.  It's a little bit like a dysfunctional family.  You've got the entry way over here saying "Hey, I'm the only normal one over here"...

but then there's the library (once known as the formal living room) who really wants to live like she's 21 even though she just turned 50.

And then there's the slightly (ahem, majorly) woodsy cousin over yonder groovin' to the beat of his own disco...

Oh-so-thankfully, time is on our side.  One space at a time, one space at a time, one space at a time.  I have to keep repeating it lest I die of that condition you get when you get so overwhelmed with what's left to do that nothing gets done because you just can't handle it all.  Just me?  Ok.

One space at a time...

Next up...ummm, I'm not entirely sure yet.  Stay tuned.  ;)

  1. It looks great -- that lampshade truly IS magic when it's turned on. Might need to find a room to put one in myself!

    1. We focused so much on how to get it hung that we didn't even think about all those pretty circle shadows it would cast when turned on. It was a fun surprise. :)

  2. You did another beautiful makeover Sheena! I love your motto, one space at a time. I also get overwhelmed then don't do anything. One space at a time!

    1. Oh I'm glad I'm not the only one! It doesn't really make sense to get overwhelmed and then stall... But it happens! Eep! Let's keep reminding ourselves Emma...one space at a time...deep breaths. Haha!
